Chapter 1 (01b, 02a)

John Button founded 1837 philosophical society of Texas

In 1850, Austin was already the capital of Texas, but the population was only 600 and people were still being killed on the outskirts of the city

Isahiat: a line across Texas showing all the points have equal rain.

Settlers moving west into the hill country failed to realize when they crossed too far and into arid territory. When people crossed this line, they didn’t immediately realize it. They thought it could sustain plantation.

There was a political need to settle the hill country, so people suppressed the info that it was arid.

The Buttons stopped just before the hill country. The Johnsons went into it.

The cabins in the hillside didn’t even have an outhouse. This life was lonely and narrow. Few of the Americans who later eulogized it would care to relive it. The only plentiful thing was terror.

Comanches were extremely violent. They tortured every woman. They killed hundreds a year. The Comanche moon meant terror.

Eliza Johnson survived attack by Comanche by hiding.

Cattle they brought to raise ate into the think layer of grass protecting the soil from the rain. Once that happened, heavy rain from the hillsides began to wash away. They put out fires that prevent cedar and brushes.

Cotton is worse for the soil than cattle.

Johnson brothers didn’t recognize the trap. Cattle drivers.
